| First impressions | WM Recorder starts up as a small, discreet window with various buttons on it. It looks very unassuming to begin with. I'm a total stranger to recording media on my PC so I was pleasantly surprised when I started my PC TV program that WM Recorder began recording automatically. |
| What I liked | Very easy to use
When you run the software, it records any TV stations you watch online. These are saved off to yur PC's hard drive and you can watch them any time you like. So effectively, you don't need to do anything, unless you want to edit the settings. I was able to make a recording of anything from movie trailers to music videos. All very easily! Videos are recorded to your hard drive WM Recorder downloads the recordings to your hard drive (into any folder you choose). These videos then appear as movies that you just double click to play. You don't need a special player - Windows Media Player is ideal. You can keep these movies forever, and build up a collection of your favourites. The videos don't take up loads of space either. No loss in quality I'd assumed that PC TV recording software would have some degradation in the audio and video quality. But that's not how it works. WM Recorder downloads the video stream from the source. So the 'recording' isn't really a recording. You're downloading the original video as you first saw it. If that sounds confusing, the main thing to takeaway is that the video and audio quality doesn't degrade when you record it. Great range of settings Although you can start using this tool instantly, I'd definintely advise going into the settings panel and customizing a few things. For instance, I found it was helpful to change the folder where WM Recorder was downloading and storing my recordings. You can also update the software (for free) from here. Works on every TV station... and beyond I tested this tool with Online TV Network on many different stations and it recorded them all perfectly. As well as recording automatically, you can opt to use familiar Record and Stop buttons. And it even works on web video sites like YouTube. If you've been looking for a way to record and keep those movies, you'll really like this tool. Built in scheduler Just like setting your VCR or DVD recorder, WM Recorder can be set to record at a certain time. This is ideal for PC TV applications because the stations are global and you might not want to stay up until Crazy-o-Clock to watch a game or a certain program. Excellent help files The user guide that comes with WM Recorder is superb. And this is one of those tools where you'll probably want to give it at least a cursory glance over - just to make sure you're getting the most from it. There's illustrations on how to do everything from simple recording, to using the scheduler, as well as the more advanced stuff. |
| What I didn't like | Finding the recordings folder
The only complaint I would have is that it took me a couple of minutes to find the folder where the movies were being stored. I then changed this in the settings to a folder I usually use for my downloaded movies and that was that solved. But it would be better to have a 'My Movies' link direct from inside the software I think. |

Wow - this tool really does a great job. It's the perfect companion to any PC TV software out there. If you love watching TV online, then this is a must-have bit of software. It's easy to use and downloads and keeps anything you want to record. There's no messing around with anything complicated. It's a solid tool that works 100% of the time. I can't recommend this enough. If you're into PC TV - get WM Recorder. |
