PC Satellite TV Blog - January 2007

I got an email today from a visitor here who had experienced problems downloading their copy of PC Show Buzz. This is often a problem online and I've had this loads of times myself. Your internet connection can go down, your PC can crash, and lots of other things can go wrong.

Luckily there's a quick and easy way to get the software on your system again. Oh, and it's the same procedure if you're re-installing after a format of your hard drive, or moving to a new PC.

1) First up you need to visit this page:

I got a good question today from one of my website's visitors, asking something many people might be wondering about PC TV products on the web.

"A lot of the "Satellite TV on your PC" claims I've seen may very well offer you software to enable viewing on your PC...

But after further research you apparently need one of those old school (i.e. large) satellite dishes in your back yard to do it.

(not to mention a method of repositioning it)

I don't see any mention of such things on your Tips/FAQ/Getting Started pages.

Can you explain to me how the software works with regard to actually getting the satellite signal?

Thanks much!
Doug"

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the email.

I think the term 'satellite' is misleading in a way. I'm even thinking of removing it from my site title because although the TV stations on the PC TV products I've reviewed are available from many different countries, there's actually no satellite signal involved.

I got an email from a visitor to my website, asking my opinion on a claim made on a PC TV product website. The site in question promises surfers 'HD quality video TV over an internet connection'. Wow!

If you're wondering what HD quality video is, it's High Definition. At the time of writing this, HDTV is just rolling out here in the UK. It's basically a higher quality picture that requires an HD compatible TV. There's not many channels broadcast in that format here yet.

Getting back to the web, the claim my curious friend was inquiring about is, I'm sorry to say, totally impossible with current technology. The problem is that HD TV over the web would require a very high quality broadcast, or 'stream', and for viewers to have exceptionally high broadband connections to the web.

In short, this is just a ploy to sell as many subscriptions to their service as possible. I can only imagine the amount of angry emails they receive each day from disappointed customers. If you read bold claims like these at a PC TV service, don't reach for your credit card.
