Well, I got a pleasant surprise when I started looking for a good tool to do this.. I stumbled on a bit of software called WM Recorder and thought I'd give it a try. I've got to tell you this software is very impressive.
It lets you download online TV programs direct to your computer. The files are saved as regular movie files you can catalog, keep and view at any time in media players like Windows Media Player. There's no loss in audio / video quality and you can even schedule WM Recorder to record at a set time.
It's very easy to use too. Once installed, it can record multiple video streams at a time automatically. This thing is the perfect accompaniment to software like PC Show Buzz and the other programs out there. It even works on YouTube and Google Video!
